"Hey, Aerith. So, I'm one of the people Justine drugged. And the key
ingredient of her amnesia potion is a specific variety of rose." Hence
Maggie's concern.
"If there are any in the greenhouse, I want them out. And if not, I
want to place a request that they not be planted here in future."
Aerith stared at Maggie in shock. It took a few moments for her hand to go to her mouth, before she shook her head.
"If there's that specific rosebush in the Greenhouse- I'll help take it out myself." She brought her hand down. "There's one rose bush we need to check first. It was...it was just planted."
She felt sick. Did she help hurt Cloud? By accident? And all the others? She couldn't have. Could she?
"Why one bush in particular?" Maggie asks warily, not so tired that she
misses the possible implications there. She is a licensed
journalist, after all.
"Nope, I hate the smell of all roses now," said with cheer in her
tone that she absolutely does not feel. She holds up the plant ID book she
has in hand, with papers tucked into it marking the appropriate page. "I
went to the library before I called you."
More seriously, she adds, "I'm probably the only person who'll react
quite this badly to rose scent. There were two other werewolves in there,
but one was willing and the other was... not as fucked up about it as I am?"
Aerith tried not to wince. Well, that was more than fair. That would be a reasonable response, considering what had happened and how the roses had been the trigger.
"I don't know if you'll be the only one that'll feel the same about roses for right now. Even if you're a werewolf," That felt weird to say, "other people may feel the same about seeing them, even if the scent won't be as strong for them."
She sighed, but her steps were steady. "If roses weren't so prickly about growth, I would see about asking Ilde, Yennfer, and everyone else in the greenhouse to put them into the shed. If none of them are the ones that Justine used, I'll see about just making a rose corner, and maybe have another strong smelling flower bush or flowers around them. Any scent that you like?"
"Mm. If I'd been wolf-shaped and smelled the plain rose, I might've been
able to pick it out. But on two legs, with other ingredients mixed in? It
just smelled and tasted like generic rose. I made my brother take
all the relevant teas and baking ingredients out of my kitchen so nothing
in my cabin smells like it."
She considers the offer, then suggests, "Mexican orange blossom's nice. Or
maybe jasmine."
"That's...yeah. Okay, I can understand that." And she wished Justine hadn't done this. It made her heart ache, knowing this had been done to Maggie, to Cloud, and so many others.
"If you want other flowers to air out your cabin or anything, please let me know. I'm not familiar with Mexican orange blossom, but jasmine...we can work with that. It'll take awhile, but I can see about making a jasmine barrier of sorts, maybe make it more...of a decorating choice, rather than making the reasoning obvious."
Maybe she could even have a bench placed there, to make things work. She'd have to ask around if someone new woodworking or something.
But that was for another time. She gestured to a group of trees, and the lone rose bush that was planted nearby.
"This is the one. Justine brought it to the Greenhouse, not long ago."
Maggie flips the book open, offering the 2 copies she made of the relevant
page to Aerith; her office setup doesn't serve much use here on the Barge,
but sometimes it comes in handy.
And she'll lean closer to study the bush herself, scrunching her nose in
distaste at the scent. She did volunteer for this. But that
doesn't mean she'll enjoy it. "I don't think so. Jedao says it's
the Damascus rose specifically, other varieties won't work, and this looks
different. I'd feel better if we flip through the book and find a positive
ID rather than just a negative one, though."
She took the copies, glancing it over and trying to browse over any sort of description so they could be absolutely sure. She doesn't want there to be any sort of misunderstandings. She'd hate to kill the roses over a mistake.
But she understood the need for safety too.
"A Damascus rose...just looking at the picture, it's not going to be difficult to find. If we find something about cultivating it- like if it needs more water, or something- that might help narrow it down. But the bloom is...pretty unique. It's almost an explosion of petals."
Beautiful really. And used for such a terrible thing.

This is...Maggie right? I'm on my way.

Yeah, I am. Sorry for skipping the pleasantries.
Thank you, I'll head over now. [With plant ID book in hand and a scanned copy of the relevant pages to leave in the greenhouse.]

[And she is there at the doors, looking worried. She wasn't sure what was going on.]
Hey- Maggie. So...what's up?

"It would be too new, but it's possible." She started walking towards the trees where the bush was located. "You'll know it by scent?"
