"Good. I hope you can enjoy them." He nodded. "It's my first time making cookies anywhere."

He had never tried to bake or cook before. But how hard could it be? ...It was kind of hard. He was just lucky these cookies were relatively simple.

"Even better. It's not easy to bake when you're not familiar." She made to open up the tub again, before offering him a cookie.

"Why don't you try? See if it tastes as good as it smells."

And it would be hard, considering the thumb situation and all.

"Yeah, it is."

He sniffed at the cookie before he gently took it from her. It was gone after a few crunches. He shook his fur out and licked his lips.

"Not as good as yours!" He declared with certainty. More than that, he thought they had a strange texture but that was probably because he had a hard time mixing up the batter. They were edible and he was satisfied she probably wouldn't get sick from them. That was a relief.

That made her laugh, and she bent down to give him a quick hug.

"I think," She teased, "you just want me to make more cookies."

But she gave him a little happy squeeze.

"Thanks Nanaki. This was very thoughtful."

He looked a little sheepish but not for long. He laughed.

"Well, they certainly wouldn't go to waste if you did happen to make some soon."

He made a soft rumbling noise and nuzzled into her in response.

"It's nice to see you smile."

"Oh, I know they won't."

She chuckled, and nuzzled her face against his ear. It was nice to cuddle up to him like this. It was nice to get a gift, apology or not.

Though his last remark made her surprised, a little.

"Mm? Nanaki...I thought I smile all the time." She thought that was her default expression.

"Hmm. You do smile most of the time," Nanaki said matter-of-factly. "But not all of the time."

He tilted his head at an angle that allowed him to look at her properly.

"But your special smiles are the best. I like earning them."

"Well if I did," She said, her voice light, "I'd have the strongest cheeks on the Barge."

She pulled back a little so he could see her face properly. But her hand moved over his back, as if to soothe it.

Or just give a good reassuring rub.

"You're you. So...I'll be giving you tons of special smiles in the future."

He chuckled at her joke. That was true! And silly at the same time.

A nice soothing rub was very reassuring. He let it hush his thoughts and focused on her words. His mouth gaped in a small smile.

"Good! And I'll earn them, too, you know! And give plenty back."

True and silly! It was nice.

And...it was nice to stroke his back, gently. It was soothing for her, and the affection was welcome.

"I know you will." She gently bumped her forehead to the top of his head. "And I can't wait to smile and be happy with you and everyone else."
