CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Aerith Gainsborough
CANON: Final Fantasy VII
CANON POINT: Post Final Fantasy VII canon (post death)
CHARACTER AGE: 22
HISTORY:http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Aerith_Gainsborough
PERSONALITY:
At first sight, she doesn't seem like much.Initially, she is a beautiful young woman, easily forgotten in the background with her smiles and flowers. Perhaps someone a person wants to know after initial glance, to know what's going on under her happy expression. To learn what is in her heart and mind can be a feat in itself.
For Aerith is not one to open up on her past easily. While she can speak of how she feels in the present, memories of who she is and what she's been through can be given with a passing comment. The fact that her biological mother died at the train station was reveled by her foster mother, not her, early on in the game; she says more than once in passing that "she's used to danger" without going into depth nor reason why. There can be more than one reason for this. In part, she just met many of the characters in the game, there's little time to talk about what she went through in her very early childhood of experimentation under Shinra's scientists. Sometimes, it was best to be underestimated, so not to be taken or abused for what she could or could not do. Or, most likely, Aerith might not have wanted anyone to feel pity for her, or drag up what was best forgotten.
For Aerith was someone who preferred to be laughing and smiling, over being worried or said. When asked in depth on why she was being pursued, she remarked "I think they believe I have what it takes to be in SOLDIER!" This would not be the first time nor the last that she made a joke of what was supposed to be a serious situation. She tends to break the tension with jokes and laughter when deemed appropriate. Aerith will laugh if she thinks something is funny, no matter how big or small it is (as we see her giggling over Zack wearing a new uniform).
This can go a little too far, to the point of seeming too focused on herself, if not self involved and or selfish. For example, when coming through with a sudden startling revelation of an Angeal imprinted creature within the church, and protecting Aerith from harm. Instead of being quiet and reflecting on the matter-on the fact that even post death, Angeal is looking out for Zack and those he cares for-after it appears that Zack is lost in thought, she declares it's time to work on the flower wagon.
This was not the first time, nor the last. But on the other hand, she is also someone whose kindness can only be admired. Aerith gave herself up to the organization that had been hunting her for horrible usage for most, if not all of her life for a young girl's freedom. She cried for the man who on his bosses order, would have kidnapped her, because he was injured. Aerith even hesitated to hurt someone's underling who could have done her serious harm if she had been caught.
Mysterious, upbeat, and kind, if a little quirky or selfish at times. One would think that with these traits, Aerith would be the perfect object of desire, a princess in her tower, the damsel in distress. Someone for the hero of the game to long for, if perhaps a two dimensional representation of a person.
Not so with Aerith. It is possible for her to be a love interest in Final Fantasy VII, but she breaks the mold. She's utterly independent, stubborn, and mischievous. All of these traits are not what we see in someone who is supposed to be stand around and be rescued.
Actually, we never see in Crisis Core nor in Final Fantasy VII Aerith standing around, waiting for someone else to take control of her. The situation, perhaps-such as her quick hiring of Cloud so she can get home safe. But not of her mind. Instead of waiting around for someone else to do something, Aerith goes out to do it herself. This is most evident where we see Cloud compromised and give over the Black Materia and their conversation following. She had realized what had to be done, and with one conversation to Cloud, she went off to save everyone on the planet. And this was without the help of any of her new found friends, no matter what they had gone through together. Perhaps it is due to her early memories of being experimented on that she can not stand being so helpless.
When she decides to come along with Cloud instead of staying home, it's not because she's interested in him-she's angry. Very angry. The same people who had made her life so difficult in the start of it had decided to destroy the lives of others, for the sake of a little gain. She refuses to sit by and just let it happen-she wades right in, and does not take any argument, whether reasonable or not, for an answer.
This may be Aerith's greatest weakness. While she is mentally strong and can handle battles, the possibility of death and even waiting for word of someone she loved for over four years, she can not stand by if someone is in a hopeless situation. By no means completely naive (having lived in the slums most of her life) she can not stand by with someone who is in desperate need. This was how she ended up going after Tifa when she was taken; that was how she was taken by the Turks when Marlene was taken as hostage. She's willing to go above and beyond for people to be free.
This doesn't mean she won't have her fun. Not only has she made one of her hobbies into her profession (gardening and selling flowers), but there is the infamous Cloud-in-a-dress incident. She convinced a complete mercenary who was trying to act like a tough guy to wear panties, a dress, tiara, and perfume.
In short, Aerith is more than just the girl who offers a flower for a gil. She's a young woman who is charismatic and flawed, a person with fears and preferences with what she wants in life.
ABILITIES:
Aerith is best described as a white mage class. For those who do not know what a white mage is, it means that she is from a group of people whose specialty is foremost healing , support (buffering, aka spells that offer protection/ensure party is less likely to die) with magic trailing behind. She also is one of the best when it comes to summoning materia (basically magic orbs; in this case, orbs that can summon monsters). However, her magic is sharply limited, as the usual way for Final Fantasy characters is to channel magic through materia. Unless she has the materia, she will not be able to cast spells such as 'ice' or 'fire'.
She is also capable of limit breaks, a magical skill that builds up over time when attacked and or angry.
A list of her limit breaks can be found here: http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Limit_(Final_Fantasy_VII)#Aeris
General notes: Aerith can also use a staff for physical attacks. She does not have high physical stats though, especially compared to SOlDLERs. She also is able to use the white materia 'holy' but as it fell from her hair ribbon moments after her death, and is the defense system for her planet, this does not apply here. She is also able to guide the Lifestream (The planet's ever flowing river of souls and spirits, where souls rest before rebirth) and can hear the planet Gaea. But as these seem specific to both being a Cetra and the Planet Gaea itself, it is dubious that Aerith will hear the spirits of the departed, the speech of spiritual bodies who have forgotten how to speak, or voices in the wind.
It would be both a relief and a loss for her, should she lose these abilities.
In short: unless she gains an item from home, aka a materia, she will not be able to use spells, nor weapons unless it's a staff.
She does retain her gardening skills as that is non magic based, but rather knowledge and skill based. Same with any street smart of assessing people; it's more picking up on mannerisms and words if nothing else.
SINS & VIRTUES:
Sins:
Greed: Aerith can be greedy for attention, and can go out of her way to get it. When the team, or Cloud, is down in the dumps, she steps right in and either says or does something in order to keep their eyes on her. For example, she went out of her way to ensure her and Cloud were separated from the others (when he was obviously feeling a little sorry for himself) to make up for her promise of a date that she made earlier in the game.
Gluttony: It can be argued that as both to protect herself and because she doesn't want to feel lonely, she tends to make friends with the people around her. However, she is, in her own way, vain. While she isn't 'fond of the color [pink]', she ends up wearing not only the pink ribbon that was picked out for her, but a pink dress later on. The dress suits her, and she knows that she's considered more attractive because of it.
Sloth: You can also say that she's easy going, if not scared of change. Often she reacts to things-say, for example, attempts to kidnap her-but more often than not, doesn't attempt to change her life for herself pro-actively. Zack was the one who suggested she sell flowers, which she did. She also lived with the same person since she was five years old and didn't attempt to move away, or find a job that took her away from the slums. We really only see her taking a proactive stance with the activation of the white materia, and the 'Holy' spell close to her death. When push comes to shove, she can go out and make her own choices, but most of the time she just lets what life does with her.
Envy: She may be an inspiration for envy, seeing as how she is well received by the people around her, and has the consideration of good, if not important people (such as Tseng; he is initially the right hand, than leader of the Turks. Not only keeps her letters safe over the space of four years, but he treats her with respect and consideration-something that someone such as his underling Elena may envy. But she may also envy deep friendships over time, or those who don't have to worry about what is considered 'odd' in society (such as being scared of the sky).
Lust: Aerith is someone who has a great lust for life, and revels in the moment. If she can get a laugh somewhere, such as with Barrett's attempt to blend in with the air crew, or giggling over Zack's new attire, she'll take it.
Pride: She is proud, whether she is willing to admit it or not. She is the last of the Cetra, and with it comes responsibilities. After Cloud's intial breakdown at the Temple, Aerith takes off with the claim she's going to do "what only she can do".
Wrath: While not wrathful herself, she inspires wrath from the people around her. When she's taken by Shinra, the group gets fired up with the need to recover her; when she dies, the team is fired up more than ever not only to stop him as before, but to get revenge.
